Katara is fourteen years old and the only Water Bender of the Southern Water Tribe. Her mother died when she was younger, in a raid on her village by the conquering Fire Nation and all the men--her father included--went off to fight them.

Afterwards, Katara took care of goings on around the house, cooking and cleaning and washing, and had to grow up rather fast while Sokka went off to "play soldier" and keep watch over the village, him being the last male left that was remotely old enough to do so.

Still, despite her somewhat difficult life, Katara had hope that things would get better, and believed in the legends of the Avatar, the Bender that would defeat the Fire Nation and reunite the Four Nations. So it seems almost that fate was on her side when she and Sokka found the Avatar, Aang, frozen in a glacier while on a fishing trip.

Since then, she, Sokka, Aang, Appa the flying bison, and their winged-lemur Momo have been on a quest for Aang to master the four forms of bending and defeat the Fire Nation once and for all.

Katara trusted Aang from the moment they first met and since then has defended him whenever possible, from phsyical attacks to angry accusations. Her relationship with Aang teeters on the edge betweem motherly and more than friends, and as of yet, it's uncertain of Katara will reciprocate feelings for Aang.

She's an extremely gifted Water-bender, that learns fast and works hard at her bending. She's faced one of the great masters of Water-bending and held her own, even if she didn't win, and was trained by him afterwards. She has also faced Prince Zuko and done the same. Katara is capable of healing very well with her waterbending--an ability that is rare and usually found only among great Waterbenders.

Katara is the responsible one of the group, very gentle and caring, and always stands up for the downtrodden. It takes quite a bit for her to lose her temper, usually someone else being targeted or hurt, but she she is angered, woe unto whoever did it--they're getting their asses handed to them. For the most part, she's very mature, as well, and has an old soul--she's wise beyond her years.

Katara always wears a necklace that once belonged to her mother, and from it she draws strength and courage for their adventures. Definitely a believer in the Avatar lore, Katara has complete faith that Aang will save the world.

More often than not, Katara is the voice of reason in the group. That, however, doesn't make her immune to making stupid mistakes, or bad judgement calls because of cute boys.
